Hey Trevor Carlson! (Plus some of our favorite children's books for the parents!)

Got mine Thursday!  Do you have yours yet?!?  I was supposed to be cleaning house for company and managed to ignore it until I felt too sick and hurt too much to go on without a little break yesterday.

Aaaand this book just kept calling my name!!

It's entirely the book's fault.

I'm entirely innocent.

So I said to self, "Self, you can read just a page or two, just to make sure it's as good as the others before it."  Two chapters later, I had to force myself to put it down so I could fold towels before company got here!

Anyway, I have some book recommendations for the young parents or parents with young children.  I know when it comes to bedtime, the storytime part can be somewhat dreaded.  Whoever is in charge of writing the books about Barbie really needs help.  Obviously they couldn't get published writing anything else!!  Actually, most of the Golden Books seem to be that way.  Occasionally one comes along that we don't mind reading once in a blue moon, but not very often!

1.

Anything Dr Seuss.  The man's brilliant!  The content of the books are silly, but really, that's half the fun!  The lines just roll right of your tongue and it's so much fun to see how fast you can get through Fox in Socks without making a mistake!  Both of us nearly have Green Eggs and Ham nearly memorized, not to mention Princess Flower!  She likes to get it out and "read" to us. :)

2.

Love, love, LOVE this book!  Again, the lines just roll right off your tongue plus it's a quick, attention-keeping read.  Good for toddlers!  I first checked this book out at the library 3-ish years ago.  I knew immediately it was a book I wanted to own because I wouldn't get tired of it.  I finally bought it on Amazon this last year and Hubby read it for the first time this summer.  I think he likes it... He at least hasn't told me it was one that should go! :D  (Which is more than I can say for the Barbie books! :P)

My girl might be a princess but she LOVES this book!  And we love reading it!  She loves the silly words and illustrations and we love that it has a bit of wit to it.

“Ye gots to be stubborn and mighty cranky,
Ye gots to be dirty and awfully stanky!
Ye gots to load a cannon and know how to fire it,
But most of all, ye gots to talk
like a pirate!”

Yep, a fun book to read!

And other "Do Princesses..." books.  Yes, I had to throw a princess book in here.  I love these books because they don't have sassy little girls who are telling their mommies and daddies just how things are gonna be because they are princesses.  This little girl asks her mommy and daddy if princesses wear hiking boots, climb trees, ride bikes, scrape their knees, kiss frogs, walk on boulders, etc., things a normal little girl might do.  Princess Flower loves it because the little girl is blonde (like her) and does things she would do.  To me, this a great way to say, "Yes, you are a princess in our eyes, but you don't need to act like a princess to be treated like one."

5.

Just like Dr. Seuss, the Berenstain Bears are classic.  I remember being read these books when I was little and now we read them to our kids!  I really appreciate that each book has a little life lesson to it, like help Mama Bear clean up your room or she might throw everything out! (Believe me, I've had these thoughts!!!) Or the old lady up the road really isn't a witch she's rumored to be, because not everything is as it seems and so on.

6.

Curious George is more of a Hubby favorite than mine, but the girls still love him.  I don't know if getting into trouble and then eventually doing something that ends up somehow saving the day counts as a life lesson, but it is fun to see what kind of monkey business George will get into!

7.

This series is a little old for our kids yet, but Princess Flower absolutely adores them!  I love that they teach science without teaching science.

I can't think of any more right now just off the top of my head, but these are just a few of our favorites.  Hubby and I are both big readers and have apparently passed that on to our children.  So we've waded through a huge amount of mediocre children's books just to find the few that we can stand to read over and over again!

What are some of your favorite children's books?  Do your kids love storytime, or are they too busy yet?  Are you a big reader yourself?  I would love to hear some of your recommendations!

I love to read, most genres, but because I teach 6th grade, I really appreciate well written books for 10-12 year olds. A few of my favs: Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech; Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket; Frindle by Andrew Clements; Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick; Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo; and so on. :)

Oh boy, oh boy!! I have a very jealous son here!!! He's been waiting....and waiting....and waiting...and, did I mention waiting?! Trev is just completing the Lemony Snicket books while waiting for THIS book! As far as putting the book down...he is required to read 250,000 words/6wks and he is well over 650,000 this far....and running out of books. Thanks for the blog post!!

Dr. Seuss is a regular read around here (Cat in the Hat tonight) as well as Curious George. The big boy wanted Berenstain Bears recently but we said maybe when he gets older. It was "Afraid of the Dark" and since he isn't (yet), we decided not to put the idea in his little mind. Funny you didn't mention Thomas the Train. :) We have several of those on our bookshelf.

I keep meaning to do a favorite children's book post (or series, since I have so many)! Thanks for the inspiration.

If you like pirates, you absolutely must read Tough Boris. In fact, it's really enjoyable even if you don't like pirates. It's a great book for teaching little boys that it's okay to feel emotions.

Peter Spier's Rain is beautiful, and a great way for pre-readers to gain narration skills.

But Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is my absolute fav :-)
