*I tried to make a chart, with sizes matching the measurements underneath, but it got all screwed up when I published it on my blog. It's all in order, just count over. 1T is the first measurement, 2T is the second, etc., etc.
This is a project I've been wanting to share for a while. I made this little outfit for a friend who'd just had a little girl. From my own experience, I
loved it when I got outfits meant for later. Newborn outfits just don't last long enough. So I made this one for 12 months. I also have to give credit where credit is due. I bought a skirt pattern on
createforless.com and used that as my
basic pattern. I wanted to use their sizing chart so I felt I had to mention that.
Warning, pretty technical terms ahead!
This is the finished outfit. I bought a 12 mo onesie pack at Walmart and added the applique to that.
The pattern goes a little something like this:
Size 1 2 3 4
Height 34in 36in 38in 41in
Chest 20in 21in 22in 23in
Waist 19in 20in 21in 22in
Finished
length of 9 1/4in 11in 12 3/4in 14 1/2in
skirt
Fabric requirements:
You will need at least 2 different types of fabric. For 45" or 60" wide. If you are going to use 3 different types of fabric like I did, get the difference between fabric side 1 and 2 in the third color.
Item 1T 2T 3T 4T
Fabric side 1 5/8 yd 5/8 yd 3/4 yd 3/4 yd
Fabric side 2 3/4 yd 3/4 yd 1 yd 1 yd
Casing:
Cut out 2 of each. Seam allowance is 5/8".
Size 1 2 3 4
L x W 15" x 4 3/4" 17" x 5 3/4" 19" x 6 3/4" 21" x 7 3/4"
Skirt:
Fold fabric in half and cut 2 of each color on fold so that you double the length. The top skirt will be 1" shorter.
Size 1 2 3 4
Top LxW 11 3/4" x 7 3/4" 13" x 9" 14 1/4" x 10 1/4" 15 1/2" x 11 1/2"
Bottom LxW 11 3/4" x 8 3/4" 13" x 10" 14 1/4" x 11 1/4" 15 1/2" x 12 1/2"
Elastic:
5/8yd of 1" wide elastic for sizes 2-4
1/2 yd of 1/2" wide for size 1
Size 1 2 3 4
Elastic length* 18in 19in 20in 21in
*This is more of a guide. I measured Princess Cabbage and actually cut the elastic at 13in because her waist measured 14in. So measure the waist, then cut the elastic 1in less than the measurement.
Other supplies:
Thread in coordinating color.
Trim, optional
Equipment needed:
Tape measure, sewing maching, serger (optional), scissors, iron, ironing board
Sew the ends of the casing together, fold in half, iron, then sew 5/8" or 1 1/2" from fold, depending on the size of the elastic. Thread elastic through. An easy way to do this is to pin a big safety pin on the end of the elastic and use that to tug it through.

Next, sew the same color together of the two skirt pieces, right sides facing. Iron seams open.
Iron and hem one edge on both pieces. Baste stitch across the top of the two skirt pieces and gather. Take your bottom piece (the one that's an 1" longer) and sew to one of casing "tails" (Like I said, technical!), right side of casing to wrong side of skirt.
Folding down the top casing "tail," it'll look like this:
Next sew the top skirt piece (the 1" shorter piece), right sides together, to the top. Iron the seams towards the elastic, then topstitch 1/4" from seam on casing. Next, pick where you want your flower to be. You could do two flowers or flowers all around, evenly spaced. I want to try that next! Anyway, on this one I wanted the flower off to one side. I tried sewing elastic to the back, thinking that'd pucker it nicely. It didn't. Instead I basically eyeballed to where I wanted the pleats to start and end, how high I wanted the skirt to lift up, then pleated the fabric as I sewed it. I loved the look I got!
I then cute out a medium and small flower shape. Using a 1" wide x 8" long piece of fabric, I used this
method to sew it all onto the skirt.
The skirt is now finished!
Next is the onesie. I wanted a little "peek-a-boo" whenever she bent over, her skirt rode up. Through trial and error I found the best thing is to cut your applique, glue it to the onesie first, then sew it. Since I didn't want her to have a big ole bump to sit one, I just did a large and medium flower shape with a circle.
I also, didn't get the flower as low as I wanted it. I wanted it 2 inches lower, more on her butt. Guess I should have put it on PC and marked it.
But I didn't.
Typical.
:D
I also didn't get a picture of the finished front, but using the same flower shapes and the frayed applique flower, I glued the flowers and stems on first, sewed up the stem and on the flowers, then did the
frayed applique in the middle.
Last, the headband. I more or less made this one up as I went along. I want the flapper, large headband style.
The top (pink) piece is about 4" x 13". The bottom (blue) piece is about 2 1/2" x 8". I cut the elastic at about 5 or 6 inches. (Don't go by the pic!) I then sewed the long edges together so I had two long tubes.
Taking the blue piece, I folded the edges in and threaded the elastic through, leaving about 1/2" sticking out.
I baste stitched 1/4" from the edge of the pink piece.
Then I stuffed the pink into the blue, feeling to make sure I had enough of the elastic in the pink that it'd get stitched over, and stitched it all together. Repeat on the other side.
I took this picture before I attached the flowers. Again, I forgot to take a pic of the finished product! Anyway, using the same method as before, I cut a medium and small flower sewed it on using the
frayed applique method. You could add more flowers or just do one off to the side like I did.
All done!
